Supporting schools and communities on their equity journey.

In the News!

“Employee ‘Belonging’’’ Letter to the Editor, New York Times, May 29, 2023. (Scroll down through the letters). In this letter to the Editor, Regis Shields responds to a New York Times article on the workplace trend of organizations moving from concentrating on “Diversity and Inclusion” to “Diversity and Belonging.” The letter emphasizes that the terms are not interchangeable; the work of inclusion creates an environment where employees feel that they belong. (A transcript of the letter is on the News and Conferences page)

Boundless dreams await.

Student performance gaps across race, ethnicity, sex, gender, ability, language acquisition and socioeconomic status have been the target of education reform for decades. Despite well-intentioned and sizable efforts, gaps remain. At Equity Journey Partners, we believe their persistence is due in part to the lack of attention to the inequitable access to opportunities for these student populations. Scaled-up improvement approaches often address the “norm” rather than specifically addressing the intended and unintended impact of cultural, racial and other social identity group membership.

Equity Audits

EJP partners with districts and communities to conduct equity audits. An equity audit is a learning journey to identify the root cause(s) of student opportunity gaps and how those gaps contribute to student performance gaps.

Capacity Building and Training

EJP’s approach to building the capacity of schools and communities to understand, own and resolve issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging is multi-faceted and customized to meet each partner on their unique equity journey. EJP provides training and workshops, executive coaching and interactive change tools.

Community Advocacy Support

EJP partners with community organizations  to be more effective advocates in advancing the equity needs of their local school districts. We offer training and workshops to expand organizations’ knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging issues in the context of school systems, empower community organizations to have strategic conversations around data, and implement change  collaboratively with all stakeholders to support students and build strong communities.

Design and Implementation Support

When districts are ready to take action to become culturally proficient and equitable ecosystems, EJP can help design and implement policies, processes and practices addressing the root causes of inequity. EJP currently supports design and implementation in the following areas: budget and finance, family and community advocacy, talent management and performance management.
